Frequently Asked Questions

  • A family or couple exists as a systems unit which is always seeking homeostasis. The concept of homeostasis means that the family system seeks to maintain its customary organization and functioning over time. It tends to resist change. Understanding how these family systems function is what makes a Marriage & Family Therapist different than other therapists. We have studied in detail how families and couples work. It takes skill to correctly introduce new behaviors into the system that will encourage the family system to adapt successfully to the new desired change.

  • Integrative Counseling uses a different approach to therapy than family therapy. In individual counseling we are on a journey to find the best version of yourself. I create a place of safety where the most delicate subjects are able to be discussed with care at your own pace.

  • I understand that considering therapy is a big step. Revealing oneself especially to a stranger can seem overwhelming. In the beginning one can worry about feeling judged. In my therapy space there is no judgement. Life isn’t about trying to be perfect but rather about being authentic to ourselves. In the therapy space we explore ways to be free to do that, for ourselves, for our relationships.

In each session I work towards a resolution of at least some small part of a presenting issue. This leaves my clients with a feeling of making progress. They usually leave a session feeling more empowered and happier.

  • I conduct therapy through a combination of in person and online sessions. Client sessions online use a HIPAA secure video platform.

  • I do not take insurance at this time. Insurance companies require a diagnosis for treatment. This diagnosis will become a permanent part of your record even if the issue was temporary such as grieving the death of a loved one. This can have repercussions later in life.

Many of the important life problems do not fall in a DSM-5 category, especially relational issues. This puts pressure on therapists to use category codes to “cover” the treatment so the insurance can be used, which I will not do.

Insurance companies can demand records at anytime which invades confidentiality, which I will not do.

  • I am private pay and offer a sliding scale. My rates generally range from $90 to $125 per session. I invite you to give me a call to chat confidentially about your situation, 774.212.4317.

  • All conversations are confidential with the exception of three situations:

    1. By law I must notify authorities if you are threatening to harm yourself or others.

    2. I must notify authorities if I am made aware of child abuse or elder abuse.

    3. f I am ordered by a court to turn over records or testify I must comply.

Otherwise what ever is said in a session stays in the session.
