SOLITUDE JOURNAL
It is important to understand that solitude is not the same thing as being alone.
There was a man in a small boat in the middle of the ocean. He is very sad because he used to be on a ship but the ship sank and all the people got into various lifeboats. During the night the boats were separated and he awoke to find himself all alone in his boat. Though he has enough to eat and drink it will be many weeks before the winds blow him to shore where he will be rescued. He is unhappy being alone.
A hundred miles south there is another man in a small boat in the middle of the ocean. He is very happy. He is finally making his single-handed voyage that he has planned his whole life. Finally, he is able to enjoy the solitude of the vast ocean and become better acquainted with himself. He has plenty of food and water. His only concern is in a few short weeks the winds will blow him to the shore and he will have to join in with other people again. He is happy enjoying the solitude.
Solitude is all about intention. You can never find solitude if you start out feeling that you have been left all alone.
It all begins within. Solitude is the journey of becoming acquainted with your closest companion, yourself.
We are not just flat cardboard cutouts. We are multidimensional beings. But to know ourselves we must be able to turn down the noise of the outside world.
To be healthy it is necessary every once in awhile to leave the world behind. We must reduce the external stimulus so that we can hear our thoughts and feel our feelings.
It is during passages of solitude that we integrate our life experience through all the layers of our being.
This brings wholeness.
